I've been spending a fair amount of time recently looking at instances of large scale systemic transformation -- both 'progressive' (e.g., the agricultural or industrial revolutions) and 'regressive' (e.g., the types of thing that Jared Diamond labels Collapse). Reconstructing what happened in many of these cases turns on archaeological evidence.
